How to Increase Your Body’s GLP 1 (aka med called Ozempic)

People have been struggling to lose weight and with new medications available, it’s giving many people more hope and sustainability, as they make changes with lifestyle. Many people have been getting prescriptions for Ozempic, Wegovy, Monjauro, and all the other GLP1 category, medications.  Recently insurance companies have been reaching out to healthcare providers directing them to stop prescribing these medications off-label.  What if you could increase GLP1 naturally on your own?

I don’t believe that the insurance companies should dictate what doctors prescribe, but that’s for an entirely different blog.  I am writing this today to let you know that you can help your body increase GLP1 production naturally if these medications are no longer an option for you, or if you’d prefer not to take them.

Akkermansia Muciniphila is a species of bacteria that is good for your stomach lining and has been shown to be beneficial in protecting against diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

A healthy gut = balanced blood sugar and healthy weight.

Here are a few things that increase GLP1 production:

  • Akkermansia Muciniphila living in the gut increases the body’s own production of GLP-1.
  • Eating healthy fats and fiber can stimulate the release of GLP1 naturally.  Akkermansia produces propionate and acetate, two short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).  These fatty acids  feed other beneficial gut bacteria to make butyrate.
  • Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, etc. Berberine, cinnamon, resveratrol and curcumin also increase GLP-1.  Fermented foods also contain other beneficial bacteria – Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium.

Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium are considered the superstars (or should I say, “superbugs”?) of gut microbiome research because their abundance is linked to better health outcomes and less risk of chronic diseases like obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

I get so many referrals from docs telling me to provide counseling for keto or no carb diets, yet much of the beneficial nutrients, prebiotics and probiotics are found in high quality carbohydrates. There are definite benefits to including certain carbohydrates in the diet versus restricting them all.  There is more than one way to accomplish the reversal of diabetes, one diet does NOT work for everyone.

Our primary goal is to assess the person and determine what style of eating would be best for them based on their lifestyle, likes and dislikes, and also pay attention to how their body responds, by using a continuous glucose monitor.
